Most disagreements with a tradesperson come from something that was never agreed at the start: whether the price was fixed, what “including materials” meant, or what happens when a job turns out bigger than expected. Voltify Contractors provides property maintenance in Old Ford as part of its documented E3 coverage, including plumbing, electrical work, painting and decorating, appliance installation and handyman jobs. This page covers what is worth agreeing before any work begins, and the consumer rights that apply whichever contractor you use.
Quote, estimate or call-out charge?
These terms are often used loosely, but they mean different things for what you end up paying.
| Term | What it means | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Quote | A fixed price for the agreed work. Citizens Advice says it should not go up unless there is a valid reason, such as extra work you have approved. | What exactly is included, and what would change the price? |
| Estimate | An approximate cost. The final bill can differ, but it should still be reasonable. | How was it worked out, and at what point would you tell me it is going over? |
| Call-out minimum | A minimum charge for attending. At Voltify Contractors, the documented standard minimum is £80 for the first hour. It is not a price for the whole job, and out-of-hours emergency attendance is priced differently. | What is likely to be done within that first hour? |
| Materials | Parts, fittings, paint and fixings can be included in a price or charged on top. | Who is supplying them, and are they in the figure I have been given? |
What to agree before work starts
For anything beyond a quick repair, it helps to have these points written down, even in a text or email:
- The scope. Which rooms, fittings or faults are included, and what is not.
- The finish. For decorating, the number of coats and whether ceilings, woodwork and wall preparation are included. For a new light or tap, who chooses the fitting.
- Making good. Whether filling, patching or touching up paint after electrical or plumbing work is part of the job or a separate task.
- Surprises. What happens if something unexpected is found, such as a corroded pipe behind a panel or an old wiring fault. The usual approach is to stop, explain, and get your agreement before doing extra work.
- Timing and access. When the work will happen, and whether anyone needs to be home.
If you rent, check that your landlord agrees to any change to fixtures or decoration before you book. Landlords and letting agents can arrange work directly.
Your rights once the work is agreed
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, Citizens Advice explains that a trader must carry out work with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time, and for the agreed price (or a reasonable one if no price was fixed). What was said about the work, verbally or in writing, can form part of the agreement. If something is not right, the first step is to raise it with the trader and give them the chance to put it right.
Cancelling work agreed at your home
When a service contract is agreed in your home or at a distance, such as by phone or online, you normally have 14 days to cancel. Guidance from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute’s Business Companion sets out two points that often catch people out:
- If you ask for the work to start within those 14 days and then cancel, you pay for the service provided up to that point.
- There is no right to cancel when you have specifically asked a trader to call to carry out urgent repairs or maintenance. Any extra, non-urgent work agreed on the same visit is not covered by that exception.
Which service to ask for
Leaks, taps, toilets and waste pipes are plumbing. Sockets, switches, lights and circuits that keep tripping come under electrical services. Fitting a washing machine, dishwasher or cooker is appliance installation. Redecorating a room or a whole home is painting and decorating, and a mixed list of fixings, door adjustments and small repairs is best booked as handyman and property maintenance. If the list covers several of these, describe everything at the start so the scope, price basis and timing can be agreed as one job.
Getting a job agreed in Old Ford
Standard working hours are 7am–5pm, Monday to Friday. For water you cannot stop or an electrical fault that feels unsafe outside those hours, emergency call-outs are available at different pricing. Photos and a clear description help when you first get in touch, and so does asking straight away whether the figure you are given is a fixed quote or an estimate.
