What to Check Before Installing a Washing Machine

A washing machine asks more of its surroundings than most kitchen appliances. It is heavy, it moves when it spins, and it pumps a lot of water out in a short time. So before installing a washing machine, check five things: the space (including depth behind and room for the door), the floor it will stand on, how far it is from a cold water valve and a waste point, whether the socket can be reached once the machine is in, and how it will get into the room.

The table below is the quick version. The sections after it explain why some positions — a bathroom, an upstairs room, a cupboard — change the list.

The Washing Machine Installation Checklist at a Glance

CheckHow to check itWhy it matters
Width and heightMeasure the gap at the front and back, and from the finished floor to the underside of the worktop. Compare with the dimensions in the new machine’s manual. Many machines are close to standard sizes, but not identical. A few millimetres can decide whether it slides under the worktop.
Depth behindMeasure to the back wall and note any pipes, valves or boxing that stick out.The valve and hoses take up space. A machine pushed hard against the wall can kink or crush them.
Door openingCheck which side the door hinges on and whether it can open fully past nearby units, radiators or a door frame.A front-loading door that only half opens makes loading awkward and can be caught every time.
The floorLook for slopes, loose boards or soft spots, and note whether it is a solid or timber floor.A machine that cannot stand level on all four feet vibrates more and is more likely to move on spin.
Water and wasteFind the cold water valve and the waste point (a standpipe or the sink trap) and estimate the distance from the machine’s position.Hoses are a fixed length. If they will not reach, the job is no longer a simple swap.
SocketNote where the socket is and whether you could switch it off without pulling the machine out.A socket directly behind the machine is hard to reach in an emergency. Extension leads and adaptors are not suitable.
Route inWalk the route from the front door, checking stairs, lifts and narrow turns.Washing machines are heavy and awkward to carry, and the route is often the slowest part of the job.

Where the Machine Is Going Changes the Checks

Under a kitchen worktop

This is the simplest position because the valve and waste are usually close by under the sink or behind the machine. The main things to check are the height under the worktop, especially if new flooring has gone down since the last machine was fitted, and the depth of the space once the plinth or kick board is taken into account.

In a utility room, cupboard or hallway

Measure the doorway into the cupboard as well as the space inside, and make sure there is room to pull the machine forward later for maintenance. If there is no water supply and waste in that cupboard already, the job becomes moving the machine to a new position, which depends heavily on whether a waste pipe can be run there with enough fall to drain.

In a bathroom

Bathrooms are treated differently because of the combination of water and electricity. In England, adding to or altering a circuit in a room containing a bath or shower is notifiable work under the Building Regulations (Approved Document P). Where a socket or connection can safely go in a bathroom is not something to decide yourself; it needs assessing before the machine is bought for that space.

Upstairs, or in a flat above someone else

Here the consequences of a leak are bigger, so look at what the floor is made of, whether it feels solid underfoot, and whether there is room for a leak tray under the machine. Timber floors tend to carry more vibration, which makes a level, stable position even more important.

Two Things That Are Easy to Overlook

Stacking a tumble dryer on top. If a dryer is going above the washing machine, check the combined height against any shelf, boiler or cupboard overhead, and confirm a stacking kit exists that suits both models. Our tumble dryer installation page explains stacking and venting in more detail. If you are thinking about a single combined machine instead, the washer dryer installation page covers what changes.

A shared sink waste. If a dishwasher already drains into the same sink trap, or one is being added, mention it. Two appliances can often share a waste, but it depends on the trap and on how well the sink drains already. Our dishwasher installation checklist covers the checks for that side of the sink.

Getting Ready for the Day

  1. Clear the space and the area in front of it, plus the cupboard under the sink if the valve or waste is there.
  2. If the old machine is still connected, run a short spin or drain cycle the day before so less water is left inside it.
  3. Leave the new machine’s transit bolts in until it is in the room. They hold the drum steady while it is being carried, and they are removed as part of the installation.
  4. Keep the manual and any parts supplied in the box, such as hoses, bolt-hole caps and brackets.
  5. Decide who is taking the old machine away and ask about it when you book.

Photos of the space, the valves and waste behind or under the old machine, and the socket, along with the new model number, usually answer most questions before anyone arrives. For how the connection, levelling and test run are carried out, and what affects the price, see our washing machine installation service page.
