Changing old halogen spotlights, fixing a dripping tap and stopping a draught under the front door are small jobs, but each one cuts wasted energy or water from the day it is done. Voltify Contractors provides property maintenance in Creekmouth as part of its documented IG11 coverage, for homes and business premises. This page covers the practical upgrades that fit into an ordinary visit and the ones that need a different specialist.
Small jobs that reduce waste
| Job | What it changes | Type of work |
|---|---|---|
| Replacing halogen downlights with LED fittings | The Energy Saving Trust says LEDs use around 80% less electricity than halogens for the same light and can last up to 20 times longer | Electrical |
| Fitting timers, motion sensors or dusk-to-dawn controls on outdoor or communal lights | Lights stay off when they are not needed | Electrical |
| Repairing a dripping tap or a toilet that keeps running | Stops water being wasted. The Energy Saving Trust notes that a dripping tap can waste thousands of litres a year | Plumbing |
| Fitting a water-efficient shower head, if it suits your shower | Uses less hot water, so less energy is needed to heat it | Plumbing |
| Draught-proofing doors: brushes, seals, letterbox and keyhole covers | Keeps heat in and cold air out | Handyman |
| Installing a replacement washing machine, dishwasher or fridge freezer correctly | Levelling, secure connections and space for ventilation help the appliance run as designed | Appliance installation |
Figures are from the Energy Saving Trust, which advises on cutting household energy use. Actual savings depend on your home and how you use it.
Choosing LED fittings properly
Replacing a bulb is often enough, but older downlights sometimes need changing entirely. Where a downlight passes through a ceiling into a room or loft above, it may need to be fire-rated, and any insulation above it must be suitable. Check brightness in lumens rather than watts, and choose a colour temperature to suit the room. Warm white around 2700K suits living rooms and bedrooms; cooler light suits kitchens and bathrooms. If you want the lights to dim, the bulbs and the dimmer switch must be compatible. Swapping fittings and dimmers is electrical work, and it is a good moment to replace any tired switches.
Draught-proofing without blocking ventilation
Gaps around doors, letterboxes and loft hatches are worth sealing. Ventilation is not. The Energy Saving Trust’s draught-proofing advice says not to block:
- extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms;
- air bricks and underfloor grilles, which keep timber floors dry;
- trickle vents in window frames;
- fixed vents needed by gas appliances.
Blocking these can cause condensation and mould, which our damp and mould guide explains. Door seals, brushes and letterbox covers are routine handyman jobs.
Water: fix the leaks first
A running toilet or a dripping hot tap wastes both water and the energy used to heat it. A worn washer, cartridge or fill valve is usually a quick plumbing repair. Check that a new water-efficient shower head suits your shower first, because the right choice depends on how the shower is supplied. When an old appliance is being replaced, the appliance installation page explains what the new one needs before it arrives.
What these jobs don’t cover
Loft or wall insulation, boiler upgrades, heating controls, heat pumps and solar panels are specialist work, and they are not among the services Voltify Contractors lists. For those, look for an installer who specialises in that work. The small upgrades above can be done around them or before them.
