Outdoor & Security Lighting

Voltify Contractors installs, replaces and repairs outdoor and security lighting across East and South-East London, from motion-activated PIR fittings at entrances and driveways to garden and path lighting. We assess your outdoor supply, mounting surfaces and controls on site before confirming the right approach.

Outdoor lighting covers a wide range of jobs — from a motion-activated light by the front door, to lighting a driveway or path, to a garden that could do with better lighting after dark. Voltify Contractors installs, replaces and repairs outdoor and security lighting across East and South-East London, as part of our wider electrical services, whether the priority is visibility and security or simply making an outdoor space more usable in the evening.

This page covers exterior lighting fittings. If you’re after indoor lighting, see our lighting installation & repair page instead; if you’re looking for CCTV or a security camera system, that’s a different kind of installation to lighting.

What Our Outdoor & Security Lighting Service Covers

  • security or motion-activated (PIR) lighting at entrances, driveways or garden boundaries;
  • garden and general outdoor lighting for paths, patios and seating areas;
  • driveway and entrance lighting;
  • replacing or repairing existing outdoor fittings that have failed, corroded or stopped working;
  • adding outdoor lighting points where none currently exist.

Security Lighting vs Garden Lighting: Different Priorities, Same Visit

These two needs often overlap, but the priorities differ:

  • Security-focused lighting typically prioritises coverage of entrances, driveways and access points, often using motion-activated (PIR) fittings that come on when movement is detected. Lighting like this can improve visibility around a property, though it isn’t a guarantee against break-ins — it’s one part of a wider approach to home security.
  • Garden and decorative lighting typically prioritises how the space looks and how usable it is in the evening — path lighting, low-level lighting, or fittings positioned for a specific seating or feature area.

Many outdoor lighting jobs combine both — a motion-activated light at the entrance alongside softer lighting elsewhere in the garden.

What Affects Outdoor Lighting Installation Scope

  • Existing outdoor supply. Some properties already have an outdoor circuit or existing fittings to work from; others need a new supply run from inside the property, which is more involved.
  • Mounting surface and cable route. Brick, render, timber cladding and fencing all affect how a fitting is mounted and how cable is routed to it.
  • Number and position of fittings. A single entrance light is a different job to lighting a full garden boundary or driveway.
  • Controls. PIR sensors, dusk-to-dawn photocells, or manual switching each have different wiring and positioning considerations.
  • Weather exposure. Fittings need to be suitable for outdoor use and their intended location — this is factored into what’s recommended, not assumed from a general product choice.

Replacing or Repairing an Existing Outdoor Fitting

Outdoor fittings are exposed to weather over years, which is often what leads to a fault — corrosion, water ingress, or a sensor that no longer triggers reliably. As with indoor lighting, whether a fitting is repaired or replaced depends on its condition and age once assessed on site; a fitting that’s corroded or has let in water is usually better replaced than repaired. For independent guidance on outdoor electrical safety, see Electrical Safety First.

What Helps Before Booking

  • roughly where you want lighting (entrance, driveway, garden, boundary) and how many fittings;
  • whether security/motion-activation or general/decorative lighting is the priority;
  • whether there’s existing outdoor wiring or fittings to work from;
  • photos of the relevant walls, fencing or garden area, if you have them — these can help with an initial assessment before a visit.

The documented minimum call-out is £80 for the first hour; the total cost depends on the number of fittings, whether a new outdoor supply is needed, and access, and is confirmed once these are known.

Voltify FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common plumbing questions from our customers.

Lighting can improve visibility around entrances and access points and support a wider approach to home security, but it isn’t a guarantee against break-ins on its own — it works alongside other security measures rather than replacing them.

Yes, though it’s a bigger job than replacing an existing fitting, since a new supply typically needs to be run from inside the property. This is confirmed on site based on the mounting surface and cable route available.

This is often down to a worn or faulty PIR sensor, corrosion, or water ingress after years of weather exposure. It’s assessed on site to confirm whether the sensor or the fitting itself needs replacing.

No — CCTV and security cameras are a different type of system to lighting and aren’t covered by this service.
