Damaged, exposed or deteriorating wiring is one of the more serious issues an electrical system can develop — and one of the few where DIY repair genuinely isn’t a sensible option. This page covers localised repairs to a property’s fixed wiring: cable that’s been damaged, exposed, chewed, chased into a wall incorrectly, or affected by works elsewhere in the property (a shelf fixed through a cable run, water ingress, rodent damage). Voltify Contractors carries out electrical wiring repairs of this kind across East and South-East London.

This is a narrower service than general electrical repairs, and one part of our wider electrical services. If you’re not sure whether your issue is a wiring problem or something else, the sections below will help you check before contacting us.
What Counts as an Electrical Wiring Repair Here
- cable damaged during other building or DIY work (drilling, fixing, flooring);
- exposed conductor visible at a wall, ceiling, floor void or accessory;
- cable affected by rodent damage, water ingress or physical wear;
- a localised section of wiring identified as faulty, once the cause has already been established;
- reinstating a safe, compliant repair at a specific, known point in the fixed wiring.
It doesn’t cover replacing the wiring throughout a whole property or a significant portion of it — that’s a different scope of work (see the rewiring note below) — and it doesn’t cover diagnosing an unknown cause, which belongs to fault finding.
Wiring Repair, Fault Finding, or Something Else?
| Situation | Better starting point |
|---|---|
| You can see specific, localised damage to a cable and know roughly where it is | Electrical Wiring Repairs (this page) |
| A circuit is faulty but you can’t see any damage and don’t know the cause | Electrical Fault Finding |
| The issue is with a socket, switch or fitting itself, not the cable behind it | Electrical Repairs or Socket & Switch Services |
| You suspect the wiring throughout a large part of the property is old or unsafe, not just one section | Contact us to discuss — this may fall outside this page’s scope; see the note below |
| There’s exposed live wiring, sparking, or a burning smell | Emergency Electrician |
Why Wiring Repair Isn’t a DIY Job
It’s a common instinct to want to fix a damaged wire directly — cutting it back, taping it, or joining it yourself. Fixed electrical wiring carries mains voltage and is meant to be worked on only by someone who can confirm the circuit is safely isolated and reinstate the repair correctly and safely. A repair that looks fine on the surface can be unsafe if it isn’t done properly, particularly where a cable has been damaged rather than simply disconnected. If you’ve found damaged wiring, the safest step is to avoid using the affected circuit if possible and have it assessed professionally rather than attempting a repair yourself. For independent advice on the risks of damaged wiring, see Electrical Safety First.
What Can Change the Scope of a Wiring Repair
A wiring repair that looks small can turn out to need more attention once it’s properly assessed. Things that typically affect scope include:
- How the cable was damaged. A single clean point of damage is usually more straightforward than damage caused by prolonged water ingress or rodents, which can affect more of the run than is visible.
- Where the cable is. Wiring behind plaster, under floors or in a loft affects how much access work is needed to reach and repair it.
- What else is on the same circuit. If a repair reveals that other sections of the same run are in poor condition, the appropriate fix may extend beyond the single damaged point.
- Age and condition of surrounding cabling. Very old or previously poorly repaired wiring nearby can influence what’s recommended.
Because of this, the exact scope is confirmed once the damage has been properly assessed on site, not before.
What to Note Before Contacting Us
- roughly where the damage or exposed wiring is;
- how it was noticed or what caused it, if known;
- whether the affected circuit is currently in use or has been switched off;
- whether this is an isolated point of damage or something you suspect may be more widespread.
If You Think the Whole Property Needs Rewiring
Some searches around “wiring repair” are actually about older properties where a much larger portion of the electrical system may need attention — sometimes called a partial or full rewire. That’s a significantly larger scope of work than the localised repairs covered on this page. If you’re unsure which category your situation falls into, get in touch and describe what you’ve found — we can advise on the right next step.
