Shelf Installation

Shelf installation for floating shelves, bracketed shelving and alcove shelves, fixed to suit your wall and what the shelves will hold. Voltify Contractors checks for hidden cables and pipes, levels each shelf to true level rather than to the room, and cuts alcove shelves to fit.

A shelf holding a few photo frames and a shelf holding a row of hardback books can look identical on the day they go up. A few months later, only one of them is still level. Good shelf installation starts with what the shelf will carry, then chooses the shelf type, bracket spacing and fixings to match the load and the wall behind it.

Voltify Contractors fits floating shelves, bracketed shelving and alcove shelves in homes, rental properties and offices across East and South-East London. Shelving is one of the fitting jobs covered by our handyman and property maintenance service, so it can sit alongside other small jobs on the same visit.

Start With What the Shelf Will Hold

It is easy to underestimate weight. Books, records, crockery and tins are dense, and a long shelf filled end to end carries far more than it looks. Before choosing a shelf, think about which of these it is really for:

  • Display items such as frames, plants and ornaments. Light, so most shelf types work, including slim floating shelves.
  • Books, vinyl and files. Heavy along the full length. These need close bracket spacing or support on three sides, and a shelf board thick enough not to sag in the middle.
  • Kitchen storage such as jars, spices and crockery. Heavy for its size, often used daily, and usually above a worktop where a falling shelf would do real damage.
  • Equipment such as a router, speaker or games console below a TV. Moderate weight, but it needs cable access and a sensible height.
  • Utility, garage or stock-room storage. Paint tins, tools and boxes call for robust brackets or an adjustable track system rather than decorative shelving.

If the plan is to fill a shelf with books “eventually”, treat it as a book shelf from the start. Refitting later means new holes.

Floating, Bracketed or Fitted Alcove Shelves

Each type holds the board in a different way, which is why they are suited to different loads.

Shelf typeHow it is heldWorks well forWorth knowing
Floating shelfHidden rods or a concealed bracket fixed to the wall, with the shelf sliding over itDisplay items, lighter books, bathroom and bedroom storageThe deeper the shelf, the more leverage on the fixings. Load ratings from the manufacturer assume a sound wall.
Bracketed shelfVisible brackets underneath, fixed at intervals along the wallHeavier loads, kitchens, utility rooms, garagesCloser bracket spacing reduces sag. Bracket style is part of the look.
Alcove shelving on battensTimber battens fixed to the back and sides of the alcove, with the shelf resting on topBooks and records, chimney-breast alcovesUsually the strongest option for heavy loads. Shelves are cut to the alcove’s actual shape.
Adjustable track (twin-slot)Vertical uprights fixed to the wall with brackets clipped in at any heightHome offices, cupboards, stock roomsShelves can be moved later without drilling again.

Freestanding bookcases and tall shelving units are a different job. They usually need assembling first and then securing to the wall so they cannot tip, which is part of our furniture and flat-pack assembly service.

The Wall Behind the Shelf

The same floating shelf can need completely different fixings depending on whether it is going onto solid brick, blockwork, plasterboard on studs or plasterboard stuck to masonry. The plugs supplied in the box are often general-purpose and are not always suitable for the wall or the load, so they are checked and swapped where needed.

Before drilling, the wall is checked for hidden cables and pipes. They are common directly above and below sockets and switches, and behind kitchen worktops where appliances are plumbed in. If an old shelf or bracket has left crumbling plaster or torn plasterboard, that area is repaired first, either as part of the job or through our drywall and wall repair service if the damage is larger.

Getting Shelves Level in a Room That Isn’t

Very few rooms are perfectly square. Alcoves taper, walls bow, and floors and ceilings slope, particularly in older London houses and conversions. That affects shelving in ways people only notice once it is up:

  • A shelf set parallel to a sloping ceiling or skirting can look straight but let things roll to one end. Shelves are levelled to true level, not to the room.
  • Alcoves are often a few millimetres wider at the back than the front, or different at the top and bottom. Alcove shelves are measured at each shelf height and cut to fit, so there is no gap at the ends.
  • Where a wall bows, the back edge of a shelf can be shaped (scribed) to follow it so there is no visible gap.
  • On a run of several floating shelves, the spacing between them is set out first so they line up with each other and with nearby features such as a TV, window or door frame.

Kitchens, Bathrooms and Children’s Rooms

A few rooms need extra thought:

  • Kitchens. Keep shelves clear of the heat and steam directly above a hob, and allow for the height of wall cupboards and any extractor. Open shelves above a worktop should use brackets or fixings rated with a good margin for crockery.
  • Bathrooms. Choose shelf materials and fixings that tolerate humidity. Tiled walls need the right drill bit and care to avoid cracking tiles.
  • Children’s rooms. Keep heavy items low, avoid shelves a child could use as a step, and anchor bookcases and tall units to the wall.

If the room is being decorated, it is usually easier to paint first and fit the shelves afterwards, particularly in alcoves. Our interior painting service can be arranged ahead of the fitting visit.

Shelf Installation Cost and What to Send Us

The documented minimum call-out is £80 for the first hour. The total depends on:

  • how many shelves are being fitted, and how long they are;
  • whether shelves need cutting to size, or battens fitting in an alcove;
  • the wall type and whether it needs repairing first;
  • whether shelving units need assembling before they are fixed;
  • whether old shelves or brackets are being taken down and the holes filled.

When you get in touch, a photo of the wall, the product link or shelf dimensions, and a note of what the shelves will hold make it much easier to confirm the right fixings in advance. Shelves are often fitted alongside TV mounting, hanging pictures and mirrors, or a longer list of jobs in a single handyman visit. Businesses fitting shelving in offices, kitchens or stock rooms can schedule it as part of our commercial property maintenance work.

Standard visits run 7am–5pm, Monday to Friday. Contact Voltify Contractors to arrange your shelf installation, or check the areas we cover across East and South-East London.

Voltify FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common plumbing questions from our customers.

Yes. Have the shelves and brackets at the property before the visit. The fixings supplied in the box are checked against your wall and the load, and replaced if they are not suitable. If you would like fixings supplied, mention it when you book so it can be confirmed.

Before, where possible. Painting around fitted shelves, especially in alcoves, takes longer and rarely looks as clean. If you are painting afterwards, keep a little of the wall paint so fixing marks can be touched in.

The plugs are removed and the holes filled ready for painting. Heavy-duty fixings leave larger holes than light ones, and plasterboard can tear if plugs are pulled out carelessly, so larger patches may need a proper repair before redecorating.
