Most laminate damage confined to a few boards can be repaired, provided the cause is dealt with and matching boards can be found. Replacement makes more sense when the problem runs across the floor, starts underneath it, or the floor is worn out anyway.
Most damaged drywall can be repaired. Replacing a section makes more sense when the board has been weakened by water, crumbles at the edges, reaches a stud, has several holes close together or forms part of a fire-resisting wall.
Repair a leaking tap when the leak comes from a washer, seal or cartridge you can identify and the body is sound; replace it when the body is failing, parts can’t be found or the tap never suited the room.
