Out-of-Hours Emergency Call Out
A bathroom plumbing checklist for refits and suite replacements: what to find out about your existing system, what to check on each product before ordering, the permissions and notifications to sort, and what to test at handover.
A toilet that keeps running usually has a fill valve that won’t shut off or a flush valve that won’t seal. A few safe checks with the cistern lid off show which one, and whether it’s an adjustment or a new part.
Repair a leaking tap when the leak comes from a washer, seal or cartridge you can identify and the body is sound; replace it when the body is failing, parts can’t be found or the tap never suited the room.
Low water pressure comes from one of three places: the supply reaching the property, the pipes and valves inside it, or a single tap or shower. Which taps are affected, hot or cold, and when, points to the cause.
Most toilet blockages are soft paper or waste in the pan’s trap and can be cleared with a flanged plunger, washing-up liquid and warm water, or a toilet auger. Solid objects, repeated blockages and problems in the drain beyond are different, and that is where DIY should stop.
There is no fixed burst pipe repair cost: the bill depends on where the pipe is, what it is made of, why it failed, whether two visits are needed, when the work happens and what has to be opened up and made good.
What you should do about a water leak depends on what kind it is. This guide helps you work out whether you’re dealing with a fast leak, a slow drip, water from above or a hidden leak, what to do about each, and when to call a plumber.
Shut off the water at the stopcock, drain the pipes through the cold taps and keep water away from electrics. This guide covers what to do with a burst pipe in the minutes before a plumber arrives, including tank-fed systems and frozen pipes.
