Whether you’re replacing an old light fitting, adding a new lighting point, switching to LED, or trying to fix a fitting that’s stopped working properly, lighting work is one of the more common reasons people call an electrician. Voltify Contractors provides indoor lighting installation and repair across East and South-East London — from straightforward fitting swaps to adding new lighting points where none exist — as part of our full range of electrical services.

This page covers indoor, general-purpose lighting. If you’re after garden, driveway or security lighting, that’s covered on our outdoor & security lighting page instead, since outdoor work involves different fittings and considerations. Our guide to indoor vs outdoor lighting installation explains those differences, including IP ratings, RCD protection and the rules for bathrooms.
What Our Lighting Installation & Repair Service Covers
- replacing an existing light fitting, pendant, ceiling rose or wall light with a new one;
- switching existing fittings to LED where compatible;
- adding a new lighting point to a room where one doesn’t currently exist;
- repairing a fitting or lighting circuit with an identified fault;
- fitting dimmer switches or lighting controls alongside new or existing fittings.
Replacing a Fitting vs Adding a New Lighting Point
These two jobs are different in scope, even though they can look similar from the outside.
- Replacing a fitting generally means the existing wiring and switching are already in place — the new fitting connects into what’s already there. This is usually the more straightforward of the two.
- Adding a new lighting point means running a new supply and switching to a location that doesn’t currently have one. This involves more work — routing cable, connecting it into the circuit correctly, and often more disruption depending on the route the cable needs to take.
Knowing which category your job falls into helps set realistic expectations before a visit.
Repair or Replace Your Light Fitting?
If a fitting has stopped working, flickers, or makes a noise, it’s not always obvious whether it needs repairing or replacing. As a general guide:
- Repair is usually appropriate when the fitting itself is sound and the fault is isolated — a failed switch, a loose connection, or a specific component issue.
- Replacement tends to make more sense for older fittings, damaged fittings, or where the cost and reliability of repairing an ageing fixture don’t compare well to fitting something new.
This is confirmed once the fitting has been properly looked at, not guessed from a description over the phone.
What Can Affect the Scope of a Lighting Installation
- Existing wiring and switching. Older properties, or fittings that have been altered informally over time, can affect how straightforward a swap or addition is.
- Access. Ceiling roses and pendant fittings are usually quick; recessed or ceiling-void work, or fittings requiring loft access, can take longer.
- Number of fittings. Replacing one pendant is a different job to rewiring a room’s worth of downlights.
- LED conversion compatibility. Not every existing fitting or dimmer is compatible with every LED option — this is checked as part of the job rather than assumed.
What to Have Ready Before Booking
- how many fittings are involved, and whether it’s a replacement or a new point;
- the rooms affected and roughly where each fitting is (ceiling, wall, over a specific area);
- whether you already have replacement fittings, or want advice on suitable options;
- any specific fault symptoms, if this is a repair.
When It Might Not Be a Straightforward Lighting Job
If lights are flickering across more than one room, or a lighting circuit keeps tripping without an obvious cause, that can point to something wider in the circuit rather than the fitting itself — in that case, electrical fault finding is usually the better starting point, so the actual cause is identified before anything is replaced.
The documented minimum call-out is £80 for the first hour; the overall cost for installation, replacement or repair depends on the number of fittings, access and whether new wiring is needed, and is confirmed once these are known.
