Fridge Installation

Fridge installation for under-counter, larder and American-style fridges across East and South-East London. Voltify Contractors checks the delivery route, ventilation gaps and socket, and connects plumbed-in ice makers and water dispensers to a cold supply with an accessible isolation valve.

Most fridges only need a socket, so the real work in a fridge installation is everything around the plug: getting a large appliance into the kitchen without damage, standing it where it can breathe, and, for American-style models with an ice maker or water dispenser, connecting a cold water supply that will not leak behind it for years.

Voltify Contractors installs freestanding under-counter, larder and American-style fridges in homes, rented properties and workplaces across East and South-East London, as part of our appliance installation service. This page covers the practical side of each type. Built-in fridges that sit behind a kitchen door panel are covered on our integrated appliance installation page.

Getting It Through the Door

American-style fridges are often wider and deeper than a standard internal doorway, and even a larder fridge can be awkward on a narrow staircase or in a small lift. Measure the narrowest point on the route into the kitchen, including hallways, corners, stair turns and the kitchen door itself, and compare it with the depth of the fridge with the doors removed, which most manufacturers list.

Where it will not pass through as it is, the fridge doors, the handles or sometimes the kitchen door can be taken off and refitted once it is in place. Doors on models with an ice maker or water dispenser carry water tubing and wiring through the hinge, so they are removed and refitted following the manufacturer’s instructions rather than simply unscrewed.

Where the Fridge Stands: Air, Heat and Level

A fridge moves heat from inside to the outside, usually through the back or the base. If it is pushed hard against a wall or boxed in by cupboards, it has to work harder and can run almost constantly. The manufacturer’s instructions give the gaps needed at the back, sides and top.

  • Keep it away from heat. Next to an oven, a radiator or in strong sunlight, a fridge has to work harder to stay cold.
  • Level it properly. The adjustable feet are set so the fridge stands firmly, often with a slight backward tilt that helps the doors close on their own.
  • Check the floor. A full American-style fridge is heavy. The floor under it should be sound and level, and the floor in front is protected while it is wheeled into position.
  • Leave it standing. If a fridge has been laid on its side or tipped during delivery, manufacturers normally advise leaving it upright for a period before switching it on. The time is given in the instructions.

Plumbed-In Fridges: Water and Ice Connections

A fridge with an ice maker or a chilled water dispenser needs a permanent cold water supply. This is the part of the job most likely to cause trouble later if it is rushed, because the connection sits hidden behind the appliance.

The connection is taken from the cold mains supply, never the hot, and normally includes:

  • An isolation valve you can reach, ideally in a neighbouring cupboard or under the sink, so the water can be turned off without pulling the fridge out;
  • a suitable tap connector or tee into the cold pipe, often near the kitchen sink or the dishwasher valve;
  • the manufacturer’s hose, with enough slack for the fridge to be pulled forward for cleaning without straining the joint;
  • a water pressure check, because ice makers and dispensers only work properly within the pressure range stated by the manufacturer. Very low or very high pressure can cause problems;
  • flushing the water filter and checking every joint for leaks before the fridge is pushed back.

If there is no cold supply near the fridge’s position, new pipework is needed. That work falls under our kitchen plumbing service and is worth planning before the fridge arrives. The same cold supply that feeds a dishwasher installation is sometimes the closest point to connect to.

Some American-style fridges have a refillable water tank instead of a mains connection. They need no plumbing at all, which can be the simpler choice in a rented property or where the fridge sits away from any water pipe.

The Socket

A fridge should plug straight into a wall socket, not an extension lead or adaptor, which can overheat when an appliance runs around the clock. The socket should be reachable or controlled by a switch so the fridge can be turned off, and not squeezed directly behind the appliance where the plug gets crushed. If there is no socket in the right place, a new one can be added through our socket and switch service.

Fridges in Garages and Outbuildings

Every fridge has a climate class that sets the room temperatures it is designed to work in. Many standard models are not meant for an unheated garage, where winter temperatures can stop the compressor running as it should. If the fridge is going into a garage, shed or outbuilding, check the climate class before ordering, and make sure the socket is suitable for the location.

Planning and Pricing Your Fridge Installation

The documented minimum call-out is £80 for the first hour. Positioning and levelling a freestanding fridge next to an existing socket is at the simpler end. The cost rises when doors have to come off to get the fridge in, a door needs reversing, a plumbed-in connection is needed, or new pipework or a new socket is required. Valves, fittings and pipework are not included in the call-out minimum. If the old fridge needs taking away, ask when you book so it can be confirmed.

Replacing a combined model rather than a fridge on its own? Our fridge freezer installation page covers door splits, housings and door clearance for those. Otherwise, send the model number, a photo of where the fridge will go, and the narrowest measurement on the route in, and contact Voltify Contractors to arrange the installation. You can also check the areas we cover.

Voltify FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common plumbing questions from our customers.

Upright is always best. If a fridge has to be laid down to get it home or up the stairs, check the manufacturer’s advice first: many allow it on one particular side only. Once it is in position, leave it standing upright for the time given in the instructions before switching it on.

Switch it off and empty it the day before, leave the door open with towels underneath to catch any water from the ice box, and clear the space and route. If you want the old fridge taken away, ask when you book so it can be confirmed, as retailers and councils also offer collection.

Yes, if it was installed with enough slack in the water hose and the isolation valve is within reach. Turn off the valve first, then ease the fridge forward slowly so the hose is not pulled tight or kinked. Check the joint for drips when it goes back.
