Property maintenance in Bow often starts with the same question: is this worth fixing, or is it time for a new one? A dripping tap, a tired extractor fan or a scuffed hallway can go either way. Bow is within Voltify Contractors’ documented E3 coverage, and this page sets out how that repair-or-replace decision usually works for everyday jobs, so you know what to ask for when you get in touch.
Repair or replace? How common jobs usually go
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. The condition of the item, and what the tradesperson finds once it is opened up, will decide the final recommendation.
| The job | Usually worth repairing when… | Usually better replaced when… | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dripping or stiff tap | The body is sound and it needs a new washer, cartridge or valve | Parts are no longer available, the finish is corroded, or you want a different style anyway | Plumbing |
| Toilet that keeps running or won’t refill | A fill valve, flush valve or seal has worn | The cistern or pan is cracked, or it is leaking at the base | Plumbing |
| Socket or light switch | The fault is a loose connection and the fitting is undamaged | The face plate is cracked or loose, or there are scorch marks — stop using it and have it checked | Electrical services |
| Light fitting | A holder or connection has failed on an otherwise good fitting | The fitting is brittle, discoloured by heat, or you are changing the room’s lighting | Electrical services |
| Bathroom or kitchen extractor fan | It is dirty or the isolator has been switched off | The motor is noisy or dead, or it no longer clears steam | Electrical services |
| Washing machine or dishwasher leaking at the connection | The hose, washer or valve is worn | The leak is from inside the appliance itself, and it is old enough that repair costs would approach a new one | Appliance installation |
| Marked or cracked walls | Damage is limited to a few areas that can be filled and touched up | Patches would show against old, faded paint, so a full room repaint gives a better finish | Painting and decorating |
| Sticking door, loose handle, wobbly shelf | Hinges, screws or fixings need adjusting or renewing | The door or fitting is split, warped or badly damaged | Handyman and property maintenance |
What tips the decision one way or the other
A few factors change the answer more than the fault itself:
- Parts. Older taps, fans and fittings sometimes use parts that are hard to find. If a like-for-like part is not available, replacing the whole item can be quicker and cheaper.
- Matching finishes. A single new chrome tap next to an old one, or a patch of fresh paint on a faded wall, can look out of place. Some people prefer to replace or repaint as a set.
- The rest of the job. If a room is about to be redecorated, it can make sense to change worn switches, sockets or fittings first, then paint once, rather than disturbing new decoration later.
- Who owns it. If you rent, fixtures and fittings usually belong to your landlord, so replacing rather than repairing normally needs their agreement. Landlords and letting agents can arrange the work directly.
Safety comes before cost. Any electrical fitting that is scorched, hot to the touch, buzzing or smelling of burning should be switched off and left alone until it has been checked, whatever its age.
What to expect when you book
When you get in touch, describe what has gone wrong and, if you already have a preference, whether you want it repaired or replaced. Photos help. If the item needs opening up before anyone can say which option makes sense, the tradesperson can explain what they find and the options before carrying on, so the decision stays yours.
The documented standard minimum call-out is £80 for the first hour. The final price depends on the work, any parts or replacement items, and the time involved, which is why grouping several small jobs into one visit is often good value. Standard working hours are 7am–5pm, Monday to Friday. For a leak you cannot stop or an electrical fault that feels unsafe outside those hours, emergency call-outs are available at different pricing.
